In English we have been looking at different fairytales. Last week the children read the story of Hansel and Gretel and started their story map. Please read the story to remind them of the key parts.
I know that children have already started their story maps but it would be useful to complete a new one so they become confident in retelling it. Alternatively, children could make puppets and retell the story to a grown up.
Tuesday
Imagine that you were taken into an enchanted forest. What is it like? How would you describe it? What would you see/smell/feel/hear/taste?
Write a description using lots of exciting adjectives. Can you use commas in a list?
E.g The leaves on the ground were dry, brown and crunchy.
Wednesday
Imagine that you are standing in front of the witch's gingerbread house covered in sweets. What can you see/smell/touch/taste/hear?
Write a description of the gingerbread house. Remember to use exciting adjectives. Try not to just use colours to describe what you can see.
Thursday
Step into the shoes of Hansel and Gretel. Write a diary of your time in the forest. Remember to use the pronoun 'I'.
Friday
The Evil Witch is very sorry for what she tried to do to Hansel and Gretel. Write a letter from the witch apologising for her actions. Why did she do what she did? How is she feeling now?

Complete the senses grid (if you have a printer feel free to print out the grid and write the responses on it. If not please write your responses on a piece of lined paper).
Challenge: Can you add a verb? Eg I saw a parrot swinging. I heard a tiger growling.
Wednesday

Ask your child these questions and record the answers on a piece of lined paper.
Thursday

We can’t go to the rainforest so we have brought the rainforest to Balderton.
What sounds did we hear? What did we see?
Look at a rainforest picture – what can we see, hear, etc?
Complete the senses grid for this new picture.
Extend by adding verbs and adjectives to describe in further detail.
Friday
Today the children are to have a go at writing their own rainforest poem. Recap senses and look at the sense grids that have already been completed.
There is a writing frame included. If you have a printer your child can write their responses on the sheet, if not then please write it on a piece of lined paper.
Challenge: Can you perform the new poem that you have written? Feel free to video this to share with the class when we are back at school or email me at year1@johnhunt.notts.sch.uk to show me your great work :)

25th January – 29th January 2021
Monday
Read the book of Rumble in the Jungle or watch the video below https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgdfofQegaM

Tuesday
Recap what riddles are. Today’s challenge is for you to have a go at writing your own riddles for a family member or your teacher to guess. Think about what the animal looks like, what it might eat and how it might move. How many different riddles can you write?
Wednesday
Today we will be recapping capital letters and full stops. Lots of us know where capital letters and full stops need to go but forget to use them in our writing. Go through both of the PowerPoints below and discuss as necessary. Have a go at completing the activity below. There are 3 different sheets that you can have a go at.
Stars can be found at the bottom of each page.
Thursday
Today we are going to be looking at questions. Think about what a question is and what the purpose of a question is too. A question is asked because someone wants to find out something. Questions tend to start with one of these words: who, what, how, where, why and when. Questions always end with a question mark too - ?
Your task today is to write some question that we could ask the alien that has just landed on Earth. Try to write at least one question for each question starter. Carefully think about things that you would like to find out about this alien.
Friday
Sing the alphabet song and ask your child to write all of the letters of the alphabet in upper and lower case. The children need to try to think of an animal that starts with each letter of the alphabet. The children are to draw the animal and the write the animal name underneath. Have a look at the example below for some inspiration and help with some of the trickier letters.

Please watch the video of “The Tiger who Came to Tea” by Judith Kerr. Listen carefully to the story and retell the story to your parents. We would then like you to have a go at sequencing the pictures below. If you do not have a printer do not worry, you could either number each picture on word or draw each picture out.
