Just like the Egyptians, the Mayans used their own hieroglyphic writing system made up of signs and symbols that they called glyphs. Have a look at the powerpoint and fact cards attached to learn more about the Maya writing system.

Once you've had a look at those we would like you to have a go at some Mayan writing, using the activity sheet attached below as a template/guide.

This week we would also like you to learn a bit more about the daily life of the Mayan people. Follow these 2 links to research this, you might also want to research it further.

Once you know more about life during the Mayan Civilisation, we would like you to present what you have found in the style of a Maya Codex. You could have a go at writing some bits using glyphs, however, you can draw images and write about them normally as well and just use a codex layout like the pictures below.

Grid Referencing

Have a look at the image below to get an idea about how to find grid references. When you look closely at a map, they are set out a little bit like the graphs and quadrants that we sometimes see in Maths! Just like in Maths, you must go along the corridor and then up the stairs. This should give you a four figure grid reference. A six figure grid reference will give a much more accurate location- have a look at the image below:

I have attached a couple of activities to help you with four and six figure grid references- one activity should help you to familiarise yourself further with the Ancient Maya! Have a go at both sheets and if you get stuck, don't forget we are only an e-mail away!

As I am sure you have already seen or heard, there has been lots in the media recently about racism and the Black Lives Matter movement. There are lots of videos online that you could watch to help you understand what racism is, how it makes people feel and how we can begin to tackle it. Of course, we are a take care school and we take care of the people around us. We can start to do this by educating ourselves on matters like these and learning how we can help to change things for our future!

Click on the two images below. The first image will take you to a message on racism from Blue Peter, and the second one should take you to a variety of different videos on Newsround.

Watching these videos could also help you with your Writing work this week! So make sure you watch them carefully. Perhaps you could speak to one of your grown ups at home and ask them any questions you have!

Once you feel like you have a good understanding of racism and what it is, we would like you to produce a piece of information about why equality is important. Create this however you want! You could create a message through a painting, a drawing, a collage, a poem, a diary entry or even by creating a video!

You might want to start by considering what racism is and how it makes people feel and how you could show this.

We really cannot wait to see what you come up with! We know how creative some of you can be!

After learning about Gestation Periods last week, this week we are thinking about Life Expectancy. First read the powerpoint and then have a look at the 2 data sheets to compare Gestation periods and Life Expectancy. Create a graph to present this data, just like the powerpoint models to you. Using your graph, can you see any relationships between an animal's Gestation Period and their Life Expectancy? Use the reporting findings sheet to help you structure your answer.
