Welcome to Fantastic Year 1!
A warm welcome awaits all that enter Year 1.
Mrs Parkes teaches Firestone Class and Miss Proctor teaches Gold Class. There are 24 children in Firestone Class and 28 Children in Gold Class. Year 1 is supported by Mrs Sewell, Mrs Parker and Mrs Bruce.

What great fun we had! We all tried so hard with our running and obstacle race. Thank you to all our family members that came and supported use during the morning.
Summer Craft Afternoon
Thank you to all the family members who came and worked with their children today for craft afternoon. We had a lovely time making our wind chimes.
Visit to the Zoo!
Today we visited Twycross Zoo. We had the most amazing time looking at all the different animals. We saw elephants, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, apes, penguins and flamingos. Even the rain was unable to stop us having lots of fun!
On Friday 17th June we worked with Year 3 to make different dens in order to raise money for the charity Save the Children.
Today the whole school celebrated the Queen's 90th Birthday! In Year 1 we made crowns, decorated place mats and biscuits and made flags. We then joined the rest of the school on the playground for an 'afternoon tea' celebration. We really enjoyed singing Happy Birthday.
Visit from the Vet
Today we had a visit from Newman Watters Veterinary Surgery. They came and talked to use about different types of pets and how to look after them.
Summer Term 2 Topic - Paws, Claws and Whiskers
Soft fur, sharp claws and twitching whiskers... What's your favourite animal? From pets at home to animals in the zoo, lets find out what animals like to eat and where they like to sleep. Do you know how to look after a rabbit or even a snake?
Thank you to all the family members that came and watched our end of topic carnival celebration on Thursday 20th June. We had an amazing time wearing our costumes, dancing and sharing all our learning.
RE Visit to the Methodist Church, Balderton
Today we walked to the Methodist Church, Balderton and had a talk from Reverend Mark Roberts. We had chance to look around the church. We saw the font, pulpit, lectern, organ, different crosses, prayer cushions and candles. We also found out that the church did not have any stained class windows!
Summer Term 1 -Rio de Vida
Hot, hot, hot! Dancing feet, step to the Samba beat! Come join the party down in Rio, keeping the rhythm with your party shaker! Bright colours, patterns and feathers... Can you make a headdress or party mask? Meet magical creatures from Brazil's myths and legends and create your own! Let's go down to Rio where football is king and practise our skills. Now lets celebrate with fabulous music and song!
Wow, what fun we are having with our new topic! We have already learnt so much about Brazil. We have found out about the location of the country, the different carnivals, which sports they play and what their music is like. We have written poems, read stories about different Brazilian myths, made carnival head dresses and flags, tried to Samba dance, played football and even played music with different instruments. Let's Go Fly a Kite
All week we have been working on our kite flying project. On Tuesday we designed our kites, Wednesday and Thursday we made our kites and Friday we has the chance to fly our kites. We had a fantastic time flying our kites around the playground. All the bright colours looked great! We had to run really, really fast in order to get our kites to fly really high!
The Easter Bunny
We were so very lucky on Thursday 24th March because we had a visit from the Easter Bunny. We were given a message that the Easter Bunny had been spotted around school. As a result we went for a hunt to try and find him. We were unable to find him but we did find a collection of bunny chocolate hidden for us in the F1 garden. We think the Easter Bunny left them for us!
Easter Craft Afternoon
What great fun we had on Tuesday 22nd March at Easter craft afternoon. Thank you to all the family members that were able to join use. We made split pin chickens and bunny rabbits made from string. We even had a go at weaving and sewing! The best part was making Easter baskets for our chocolate eggs!
Sport Relief 2016
What a great time we all had raising money for Sport Relief! We (including parents) all dressed in our sports clothes or in different costumes for the event. We joined in a whole school warm-up on the playground before completing 3 laps around the filed/playgrounds! We even had a visit from a Minion! In total the school raised over £540! What a fantastic event! Well done everyone!!!!!
Flowering Plant Hunt
On Tuesday 15th March we all went on a common garden and wild flowering plant hunt around the KS1 playground. We had to find images of different flowering plants hid all around the playground and then copy their name under the image on our recoding sheet. We had great fun running all around the playground.
World Book Day
Thursday 3rd March was World Book Day. We all brought our favourite book into school to share with our friends. We also had a visit from Year 4 who shared their books with us. During the day we all tried to answer the book quiz that was hidden around school. We were very good at matching the book covers to the different story sentences!
Chinese New Year
On Monday 8th February we learnt all about Chinese New Year including the different associated customs. We also made a Chinese Dragon and tied some Chinese food. Did you know that it is now the year of the monkey?
During RE we learnt about the story of Noah's Ark. We read the story and then worked in small groups to act it out using puppets. We had great fun making the puppets and working with our friends.
Math and English

Having Fun in PE
Our PE work this term involves using the large apparatus. We have been learning how to use the different equipment safely and investigating how to travel in different ways.

Christmas Jumper Day
What a great range of festive jumpers in Year 1 for Christmas Jumper Day. As a school we were able to raise £360 for Macmillan.
Thank you to all the parents and family members who came to watch the Year 1 and 2 Christmas performance of 'A Little Bird Told Me'. All the children worked very hard to learn their lines and the different songs.
Christmas Craft Day
Thank you to all the parents and family members who came to the craft afternoon on Tuesday 1st December.
Superhero Day took place on Wednesday 25th November. We came dressed in our superhero costumes and took part in lots of different activities. Have a look at our fantastic recycled superhero models. We tried really hard to make them without any help!
On Friday 20th November we walked to our local recycling bins at The Grove Leisure Centre. We spotted lots of different buildings on the way including Farm Foods and the petrol station. We were able to recycle our glass and cans.
Children in Need
On Friday 13th November we chose to dress as superheroes, decorate a biscuit, make a split-pit Pudsey and take part in a Pudsey party with our teddy bears.
On Wednesday 11th November we gathered as a whole school to think about the people around the world who have been involved in wars and who have been affected by them. In our English work we then watched a video clip about Remembrance Day and produce a piece of non-fiction writing. We also made a collage poppy in Art.
On Friday 6th November, Sunita visited our school. She talked to use about the Hindu festival of Diwali. We listed to the story of Rama and Sita and learnt about how Hindu's celebrate this special time. We even listed to some Indian music and danced with our hands. Following Sunita's visit we completed a writing tasks about Diwali in one of our English lessons.
On Friday 23rd October we all choose to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Research. As a school we raised over £400.
On Wednesday 14th October we all went on an Autumn walk around Balderton Lake. We found lots of examples of Autumn including different coloured leaves and berries. We even saw some ducks on the lake.
Teddy Bear Capes
We designed and made superhero capes for our teddy bears. The felt was tricky to cut but we tried very hard. We think they look fantastic!
Reading in Class - September, October and November
Thank you to all the parents and family members that came to read in class on Thursday 24th September 2015, Wednesday 21st October and Wednesday 11th November. It was lovely to see all the children enjoying a book. We look forward to seeing you all again soon!
Rugby World Cup
As part of the school celebrations for the Rugby World Cup each class were drawn a country to support. Firestone Class supported South Africa and Gold Class supported Australia. As part of the celebrations were learnt about our counties and their rugby teams. Year 1 are very lucky as South Africa finished 3rd and Australia finished 2nd!
Spring Bulb Planting
At the start of September we all planted daffodil bulbs. This was to commemorate the longest reign of Queen Elizabeth II. We enjoyed planting the bulbs and are looking forward to seeing them flower in the Spring.
